The Commission #7
By Neil Kapit

Weeks pass, and the Commission becomes more and more prevalent in the world. It seems as though one cannot turn on the news without hearing about the Commission’s invasion of some Southern Hemisphere country, or their battle with an alien or magical force. Hardly any of the news reports the Lair Legion, and when they are mentioned, they are often dismissed as “ obsolete “. An equal amount of pundits dismiss the Commission as “ tyrannical “.

Amidst all this, Nitz and Molly finally go on their “ outing “, a trip to see Lance Flutterby’s new film, “ The Heart of the Music. “ Molly actually enjoys the film, and feels touched by the story of a poor young man affected by tragedy and learning how to sing and love again. Nitz, however, has other things on his mind and only sees enough of the movie to conclude that it “ sucks “ ( which, admittedly, does not take a significant amount of viewing ).

As the movie rolls on, Nitz thinks to himself about the Commission’s role in the world, and what they’ve done so far. He remembers the rhino’s wish that he visit Ykraa, months after its invasion. Halfway through the movie, he complains to Molly of stomach pains from some bad popcorn and teleports her back to the Citadel, following that with teleporting himself to Ykraa. He skips the opportunity for a goodnight kiss, something he was looking forward to.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amidst this Commission’s mass-media exposure, the country of Ykraa, the first country the Commission invaded, flounders in a power vacuum. As Nitz the Bloody walks through the streets of the city’s capital of Pyrarra, he doesn’t see the face of freedom. He sees ruined, charred buildings and emaciated people, people lying on the streets, some of them not moving at all. As Nitz walks on the desolate streets, people cower away from him; a group of malnourished children who were playing on the pavement get up and run away from him, taking off in all directions. Nitz puts his arm outwards and mouths “ Wait “, but by the time he finishes speaking, they are all gone.

Nitz hears a thump on the back of his armored head, and looks down to see a rock fallen to the ground. He turns around and screams, “ Okay, who the hell threw that? “ and sees a young man, the same age as Nitz, frozen in fright. Nitz gets his cudgel out of its holster and is about to say some sort of spell, but when he sees the look on the young man’s face, he just turns around and walks away.

This can’t be the finer world Stanng was talking about, Nitz thinks. This can’t be....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Laboratory, the seventy-fifth room of the Citadel; a room filled with all manner of scientific equipment. At the moment, Stacy Infinity lies on an operating table, her relatively large eyes wide open. Stanng stands over her with a portable scanner, waving it above Stacy’s little hands.

“ Hmmm, “ Stanng notes to himself, “ The readings indicate that in just one of the Platinum Child’s fingers is enough energy to power the continental United States for a year. Such a power source, in the wrong hands, could destroy the entire world in a blink of an eye. Good thing that I alone wield it.... “

Behind Stanng, Nitz storms into the room. “ Stanng! “ He yells. “ We need to talk. “

Stanng waves his hand to dismiss Nitz. “ I’m busy, Nitz. Go away. “

” This is important, goddamnit, “ Nitz growls. “ I was just in Ykraa today and the place is in the crapper. In the power vacuum we left them in, people are STARVING in the streets. The economy is in ruins. People would be rioting if they weren’t so afraid of our retribution. How are we going to leave the place now that we invaded it? “

“ We already left it, “ Stanng says calmly. “ It’s their job to take care of themselves, not ours. Our job was just to remove an evil regime that was preventing them from taking care of themselves. “

” But that doesn’t fix things the way they are now! The people there are dropping like flies. Why don’t use that big brain of yours to figure out a solution? “

” Because that isn’t our job. We don’t play nursemaid for the world. We just take out the trash, so to speak. “

” That’s another thing I wanted to talk about....do we really think we need to do all this killing? Do we need to execute every person who looks at us wrong? “

” What the hell do you want us to do? Put them in jail to take up space? Give them group therapy and hugs? Talk the them about their genocide over milk and cookies? These animals kill other people. Do you even read the news? Don’t you care? “

” What about you? You’re just a white boy from Pierce Heights who’s going to inherit his dad’s software empire when he turns eighteen Don’t you care about the people you’re saving? Or do you just like the killing? “

Something snaps in Stanng as he quickly turns around and grabs Nitz by the scruff of his neck. Nitz pretends to feel pain when his shorter leader pulls down on his coat. “ You don’t think I care?! ” He shouts at Nitz. “ You don’t think I feel the thoughts of every f---ing person on this planet? Every starving child, every diseased mother, every man dying in battle? Of COURSE I care! Ever since I was five I was in tune with the world’s pain. It almost drove me mad, listening to all the suffering. “

He starts to let go of Nitz’s neck, and turns away. “ That’s why I formed the Commission, that’s why I recruited all of you losers to fight the evils of the world. But there’s so much evil, even we can’t fight it all. Humanity’s worst enemy is itself......they do these things to themselves, not alien boogums from outer space. So they need to learn how to save themselves. We can’t just go in and drop food on every famished country, we don’t have the time or resources, and we can’t be sure the donations would go to the right sources. Even I can’t stretch myself that thin. “

“ You could try, “ Nitz dryly iterates.

“ I’m WORKING on it, “ Stanng screams “ I’m trying my best to find solutions for the entire Earth. I’m trying to make a finer world here. But I’m also a realist, I know that the world can’t just be saved by a punch to the face or an oversized donation check. So don’t tell me I don’t care, you son of a bitch!! “

Nitz and Staang stare at each other for nearly a minute. Finally, Nitz leaves the room in a huff. He doesn’t notice Stanng sticking his stroking his chin, pondering his next move.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“ I’m back from Ykraa, “ Nitz says as he enters the Zeku dimension, “ and I think I’ve figured things out. “

” What do you need to do, “ the rhinoceros asks.

“ I think it’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? He’s not going to listen to reason, so I need to deal with him permanently. Won’t be easy, though. “

” Then access my full power to do what you must. “

“ Thank you. “

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“ Stanng to all units, Stanng to all units. Report to the Conference Room immediately. “

The various members of the Commission interrupt their activities to gate over to their destination. The Umbra puts down her book ( Naomi Klien’s “ No Logo “ ) and teleports in. Bateleur drops his rolled-up dollar bill, while the Enlisted turns off the Training Room’s battle droids. Molly takes Stacy Infinity back to the Nursery from her stroller ride through the Garden, then proceeds to the Conference Room.

“ Okay, people, we’ve got a big problem here.....where is Nitz? “

“ Right here Dr. Evil, “ Nitz states as he gates into the room.

“ Where the hell have you been? “ Stanng demands.

“ Zeku dimension, “ Nitz replies, “ Red Bull break. “

“ Whatever. The point is, we’ve got more trouble. “

” It appears we’re being called out, “ The Umbra iterates. “ A group called the Nuclear Knights of Retribution is down in the West Bank, rallying the people into a frenzy. “ She points to one of the monitors, and a holographic screen enlarges. The members of the Commission see a group of four men and two women in cerulean blue and black armor standing in the streets of Jerusalem, waving their fists. They stand in a circle, surrounded on all sides by an enraged crowd. One of the blue armored knights is shouting to them.

” We come from the far future, where the Commission has turned the whole Earth into a totalitarian state, “ the man screams in Arabic, conveniently translated onto the monitor screen in subtitles. “ Thoughts are monitored at all times, the slightest negative thought is punishable by severe shock therapy. And any actions not determined by one’s birth-given routine are punished by death! “

The crowd assembled scream and shake their fists. “ Do we want to live in fear of the superhumans, “ one of the women calls. “ Or do we want to fight back? Take up arms against the Commission; gather all your weapons, all your vehicles, all your military might! Show them that humanity doesn’t bow so easily. “

” As you can see, “ Stanng dryly says, “ This won’t end well. “

” True, “ Nitz replies, “ But they haven’t DONE anything to us yet. Why bother? “

” Nitz has a point, “ the Umbra agrees. “ If these people come from the future like they claim they do, we could learn much from them. “

” I already know everything I need to know, “ Stanng grimaces, “ They’re a bunch of f---ing crazies who’re poisoning our reputation and undermining our activities. I hope they give us an excuse to attack them... “

A bullet flies from one of the protester’s guns and hits the edge of the Citadel’s base. It doesn’t even scratch the rock.

“ There’s the excuse, “ Stanng grins. “ Move out. “

Stanng teleports down to the Earth, and the rest of the Commission follows. Nitz stays back, and thinks long and hard.

How can I kill Stanng and make it look like an accident, he asks himself. He gets no answer, until a radio transmission shouts at him to get going. He quickly opens up a portal to warp down through.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“ So, “ says the man in the blue armor, “ I’ve waited half a century to meet you, Stanng. You have anything to say for yourself? “

” Nothing but that you’re a complete nutball, “ Stanng retorts, the entire Commission behind him. “ I can’t read your minds for some reason, but I don’t believe for a second that you’re from the future. “

” Believe it, “ the blue man snarls. “ My father was personally and publicly killed by you for his dissenting views. This, “ he screams, drawing out his pistol, “ is for him! “

Molly instinctively puts her gigantic hand in front of Stanng, blocking the plasma shots. She feels a warm sensation on her palm. Stanng opens up telepathic channels between himself and the rest of the Commission, and orders them to fight. They run forward to meet their “ futuristic “ enemies. The crowd of protesters run towards the Commission as well, screaming in Arabic and Yiddish alike. Nitz stays behind, standing still but holding his cudgel in a battle-ready position.

“ Umbra to all units, “ the shadowy cyborg announces as she tries to stretch across a sea of unarmored men, “ I’m having a bit of difficulty getting to these future characters through the crowd. Any ideas on what I should do? “

” They chose to ally themselves with these assholes, “ Stanng replies, “ Anyone who gets in the way, gets in the way. “

” Are you certain? They have a right to protest.... “

” Just put these stupid bastards out of their misery. “ The Enlisted leaps across the crowd, jumping from head to head with his enhanced strength and agility, and materializes a long adamantine sword out from his pocket arsenal dimension. He slashes at one of the blue armored knights, who immediately draws his own sword and parries. In the air, Bateleur soars above the crowd, dropping grenades of tear gas below. Another Nuclear Knight of Retribution takes to the air via jets in his boots, and fires several force beams at Lance Flutterby, knocking him out of the sky. Below, the Umbra stretches around a female Knight and tries to stick her claws into the knight’s neck, but a force field of light activates, and she is thrown back. The crowd tramples over her, doing her little damage but overwhelming her sensors. Molly tries desperately to force the protesters away without damaging them, but to little avail; there are too many even for her giant hands.

Through all of this, Nitz does nothing. He just stands still with his force-field active and looks at Staang, floating over the crowd with his telekinesis. Nitz tries to get a clear lock on the fifteen-year-old post-human commando. When he manages to focus his attentions to Stanng’s position, he has only one word to say....

“ Terminateku... “

NEXT: The final fate of Stanng.
